Primary Eye Care (PEC) Training:

Sri Lanka's Vision 2020 national plan recognizes the importance of ensuring public health inspectors, nurses and midwives have greater awareness and knowledge of eye diseases and can therefore refer patients to eye clinics for treatment.

By providing training in primary eye care to health professionals working in health centers and villages within the catchment area of an eye clinic, a local referral network will be created to ensure a regular supply of patients for the eye clinics.

IRIS is seeking funds to support a three-year partnership program with the MoH aimed at providing PEC training to all health professionals working in catchment areas of the five eye clinics IRIS has agreed to support with equipment. PEC training courses provide for a national curriculum being taught over a two-day period to a maximum of 40 participants:

In the first 12-months, IRIS will fund two PEC training courses in Polonnaruwa, Kalmunai, Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya & Monaragala for a total of 400 health professionals.

IMPACT

Over the three-year period, 1,200 health professionals working in health centers and villages will be trained in identifying eye diseases and be referring patients to five eye clinics.
