Cambodia : IRIS Programs print friendly page email this page

Cambodia has a population of 12 million people, growing at an annual rate of 2.5%. 85% of the population lives in rural areas, the majority as farmers. 36% of the population exists on less than US$0.65c a day.

Current estimates indicate the backlog of cataract cases in Cambodia is 80,000, and the annual incidence of new cases is 19,000.

Eye Clinic Programs:

In 1998 IRIS constructed Cambodia's first purpose-built eye clinic, the IRIS Clinic in Kampong Cham province. In 2004, The Ministry of Health asked IRIS to construct a second clinic in the province, which, with its population of 1.6 million, is the most densely populated province in Cambodia. Mr Karolos Fix (a long standing supporter of IRIS in Cambodia) and a number of his friends agreed to provide the funds needed to construct the new clinic in Tboung Khmum District which was opened in May 2005.

During 2008, IRIS subsidised cataract and other surgeries for poor people at 6 eye clinics in 5 provinces: Kampong Cham (2), Siem Reap, Pursat, Battambang and Kampot. Program outcomes were:

Eye Camp Programs:

Since 1997, IRIS has supported an annual program of outreach surgery eye camps in those provinces of Cambodia that remain without an eye clinic. During 2008, IRIS organized six eye camps in 3 provinces: Preah Vihear (2), Odar Meanchey (2) and Kompong Som (2). Program outcomes were:

By December 2008, the combined total of IRIS clinic and eye camp programs since inception in Cambodia had resulted in 125,319 people receiving eye examinations and 23,485 surgeries being performed, 15,291 of which were to remove cataracts

Cyclo Driver Program:

In 2008, IRIS provided a grant of $6,000 to support the core running costs and administration of the Cyclo Centre, which provides medical advice, training and support to over 1,500 Cyclo drivers in Phnom Penh.

At any one time the capital Phnom Penh has a transient population of up to 2,000 cyclo-drivers, many of whom come from all parts of the country to earn money for their families in between the rice planting and harvesting seasons. IRIS staged an eye screening programme for Cyclo drivers in October 2008 where a medical team provided screening and refraction services to 430 cyclo drivers and their families. 27 people received on-the-spot treatment and 260 people were given glasses free-of-charge. A total of 105 people needed eye surgery (62 cataract/43 other surgery).

CAMBODIA PROGRAMS IN 2009:

In 2009, IRIS will continue to subsidize the cost of surgery for poor people at three eye clinics and support the annual outreach eye camp programme in remote, rural areas where there are no eye clinics. To do so requires a budget of:
