Eye Clinic
Programs:
In 1998 IRIS
constructed Cambodia's first purpose-built eye clinic, the
IRIS Clinic in Kampong Cham province. In 2004, The Ministry
of Health asked IRIS to construct a second clinic in the province,
which, with its population of 1.6 million, is the most densely
populated province in Cambodia. Mr Karolos Fix (a long standing
supporter of IRIS in Cambodia) and a number of his friends
agreed to provide the funds needed to construct the new clinic
in Tboung Khmum District which was opened in May 2005.
During 2009, IRIS subsidized cataract and other surgeries for poor people at provincial government eye clinics in the provinces of Pursat, Kampot, Battambang and Kampong Cham. IRIS also financially supported the work of the Battambang Ophthalmic Care Centre (BOCC), run by a local NGO. Program outcomes were:

Eye Camp Programs:
Since 1997, IRIS has supported an annual program of outreach surgery eye camps in those provinces of Cambodia that remain without an eye clinic. During 2009, IRIS organized 8 eye camps in 5 provinces: Preah Vihear (2), Odar Meanchey (2), Kompong Som (2). Pailin (1) and Koh Kong (1). Program outcomes were:

By December 2009, the combined total of IRIS clinic and eye camp programs since IRIS started working in Cambodia had resulted in 134,961 people receiving eye examinations and 26,895 surgeries being performed, 17,605 of which were to remove cataracts.
Cyclo Driver Program:
In 2009, IRIS provided a grant of $5,760 to support the core running costs and administration of the Cyclo Centre, which provides medical advice, training and support to over 1,500 Cyclo drivers in Phnom Penh.
At any one time the capital Phnom Penh has a transient population of up to 2,000 cyclo-drivers, many of whom come from all parts of the country to earn money for their families in between the rice planting and harvesting seasons. IRIS staged an eye screening programme for Cyclo drivers in November 2009 where a medical team provided screening and refraction services to 540 cyclo drivers and their families. 47 people received on-the-spot treatment and 296 people were given glasses free-of-charge. A total of 79 people needed eye surgery (62 cataract/17 other surgery).
CAMBODIA PROGRAMS IN 2010:
In 2010, IRIS will continue to subsidize the cost of surgery for poor people at eye clinics and support the annual outreach eye camp programme in remote, rural areas where there are no eye clinics. IRIS, in partnership with the International Centre for Eyecare Education (Australia), will over the next two years establish refraction and low vision services and optical workshops that can make and dispense glasses at all eye clinics IRIS supports. To do so requires a budget of:
